Down with the Tory fundamentalists!
Next March, the Conservative Party of Canada will hold its founding congress in Montreal. Created last winter out of the fusion of the Progressive Conservative party and the Canadian Alliance party, this new party is pulling the Canadian political agenda to the right.

The elections of last year prevented them from holding their founding congress. Hence, they have a rendez-vous in Montreal on March 19th and 20th 2005. A few thousand tories will gather to discuss their hyper-capitalist positions on tax cuts, cuts in social programs and deregulation in favour of private enterprises.

To this, they add a couple of target goals like a significant increase in military budgets dedicated to “security” of all kinds. However, the trophy goes to their position on social rights: they oppose abortion rights, salary equity, and same-sex marriage, and favour the criminalisation of minor infractions, etc. The intolerance and social conservatism of the Progressive Conservation Party is truly frightening.

This meeting of reactionary scumbags will be held exactly 10 years after the visit of the American religious group Human Life International. Back then, they were met by a popular education and mobilization campaign and a demo of more than 3000 people confronted their visit.

In 1994, the visit of Preston Manning in Montreal, then the founder of the Reform Party, had incited a major protest at Concordia University. He didn’t dare come back to Montreal for a few years after that.

The choice of the Progressive Conservative Party to hold their founding congress in Montreal is far from random. They want to show that they truly are a national political party. But they also want to build up their militant base here and make links with the no-less reactionary party of elderly Mario Dumont and the Action démocratique du Québec (ADQ).

The Conservative Party deserves a welcoming committee worthy of the nauseating effect that its policies have on us.

Together, let’s organize them a good collective kick in the ass!
